Cranes rely on their winch for a great deal of their functionality. As such the type of winch that a crane uses can have a lot of impact on how that crane operates and lifts loads. This post looks at several winch types and how they function on their associated frame.

Open Winch Cranes

Open winch cranes are used mainly for assembly and maintenance roles. Using their open winch mechanism enables them to work on a trolley system, allowing for smooth and steady movement of heavy loads.

Ship and Barge Derreck Crane Winches

These cranes function with the winch at the bottom of the crane structure. The crane itself towers steeply, allowing for loads to be moved on and off of ships and barges. The low winch allows for the controls to be placed directly next to it. Because of the close proximity of the controls they are mechanically attached to the winch, which is an arguably safer and more direct way of controlling the crane.
