Earlier this week, a video went viral showing a crane tipping over lifting a digger, but if the operator followed our pieces of advice, it wouldn’t have happened.
Here’s a few rules every crane operator should know:
- Always use the crane manufacturer’s load chart provided
- Make sure you know the exact weight of each load.
- Use visual signs of tipping as an indicator of lift capacity.
- Make sure outrigger pads are supported on firm, stable surfaces before beginning a lift.
- Always check for overhead power lines and other obstructions. Comply with OSHA regulations always!
Most of the time, common sense is key to a safe lift, and you only need to think carefully about the situation before you operate the machine because the fact is lives can be at stake.
