When considering industrial equipment, there are two main types of batteries. Starting (used in cranking) and deep cycle (used for marine-golf cart-forklift). The starting battery is designed to deliver quick bursts of energy (such as starting engines) and have a greater plate count. The plates will also be thinner (more surface area) and have somewhat different material composition.

The deep cycle battery provides less instant energy but greater long-term energy delivery. Deep cycle batteries have thicker plate’s design and can survive a greater number of deeper discharge cycles. Its important to note that starting batteries should not be used for deep cycle applications. There is a less known type called a Dual Purpose Battery is only a compromise between the 2 types of batteries.

It is important to make sure a battery is well maintained. To do this, the battery should be clean and cable connections need to be cleaned and tightened. Many battery problems are caused by dirty and loose connections. Serviceable batteries need to have their fluid level checked regularly, and only at a full charge.
